Equipment

What You Need to Start Playing 8‑Ball

Recommended Gear for New & Developing Players

Getting started at Gladstone 8 Ball Association is easy, you don’t need expensive equipment to enjoy the game. Many players begin with basic gear and upgrade as their skills grow. Here’s what we recommend for anyone joining our club.

1. A Cue (Your Most Important Tool)

You can play with any cue, but a good beginner cue makes a big difference in control and consistency.

Recommended Specs

  • Weight: 18–19 oz
  • Tip Size: 8–9 mm (ideal for International Rules)
  • Length: Standard 57″
  • Tip Type: Medium leather tip

Beginner Options

  • Club cues (free to use)
  • Entry‑level cues ($60–$120)

Intermediate Options

  • Two‑piece cues with better shafts and tips ($150–$300)

2. A Cue Case

Protecting your cue is essential, especially in Queensland’s humidity.

Recommended Types

  • Soft case: Lightweight and affordable
  • Hard case: Best protection for regular players
  • 2×1 or 3×1 cases: Space for cue, extension, chalk, and accessories

3. Chalk

Good chalk improves grip and reduces miscues.

Recommended Chalk Types

  • Triangle
  • Master
  • Taom (premium option)

4. Cue Tip Tools (Optional but Helpful)

These help maintain your cue tip so it grips the cue ball properly.

  • Tip shaper
  • Scuffer
  • Sandpaper block
  • Tip pick

5. Extensions (Optional)

Some shots require extra reach. Players often use:

  • Butt extension (screws into the cue)
  • Telescopic extension (universal fit)

The club also provides rests and mechanical bridges.

6. Comfortable Clothing & Footwear

There’s no strict dress code for social play, but we recommend:

  • Comfortable shoes with good grip
  • Clothing that doesn’t restrict your stance or cueing
  • Avoid loose sleeves that may touch the cue or balls

7. A Positive Attitude

The most important thing you can bring is:

  • Respect for opponents
  • Willingness to learn
  • Patience
  • Good sportsmanship

Optional Upgrades for Serious Players

  • Carbon fibre shafts (low deflection)
  • High‑end cues (Peradon, CueWorld, McDermott, etc.)
  • Premium chalk (Taom, Kamui)
  • Custom cue tips (Elk Master, Kamui, G2)
